Annual Sale-Exhibition 2009



From the 18th of October to the 28th of February the annual exhibition and sales exhibition takes place in the Kunsthaus Kannen. Approx. 300 works are presented by more than 50 outsider artists of the house as well as by guest artists from Germany and Europe.

There are shown a variety of objects, drawings and paintings from mentally handicapped or chronically psychically ill artists. This kind of art is entitled as „outsider art“ or „art brut“. For many years this creative work is continuously supported and promoted in the studios of the Kunsthaus Kannen.

2x2 Forum für Outsider Art


“2x2“ is the title and also the concept of the exhibition: Between the 1st and the 4th October, 22 studios from Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Russia will come together in Kunsthaus Kannen in Münster to display their work, answer questions and be ready to take part in discussions and stimulating dialogues. Each participating studio has been provided with an area of 2x2 metres for its respective presentations. The exhibition hall at Kunsthaus Kannen will be filled compactly and diversely with the presentation areas being clearly demarcated for each individual studio.

Kreidezeichnung


Within this exhibition the exclusive works of three outsider artists, Ulrich Röckmann, August Vibert and Josef Schwaf, all part of the museum’s collection, are presented to a broad public for the first time.

Within this annual exhibition you are to explore among others theimaginative figures of Klaus Mücke, bright watercolours of GerdSchippel as well as vivid paintings of Werner Streppel, drawings ofPaul Löwenthal and Werner Brandl.

Sale-Exhibition 2008


All paintings, drawings and objects are created by 40 mentally handicapped and mentally disturbed people working at our house. Further young talents will get the possibility to show their art to a broad publicity.

The Prillwitz Idoles

- true guards and faked saints -
according to an idea of Daniel Spoerri

In the 1970s the artist Daniel Spoerri recovered the Prillwitz Idols in a book from 1771. The idols inspired him to create a number of different objects. Taking reference to these and the Prillwitz Idols mental handicapped people from the “Werkstatt Allerhand” in Cologne and the “Kunsthaus Kannen” created wooden objects, drawings and paintings. Together with the works of  Daniel Spoerri these objects will be shown in the exhibition.

Lyrics and drawings from the psychiatry

The exhibition shows graphic works and lyrics. Poets and artists of the house as well as guests from the domains of literature and art take part. The exhibition will include readings, workshops and a symposium.

From the 7th to the 20th of April 2008 an encounter between students of the postgraduate study course “Bildnerisches Gestalten und Therapie” (art and therapy) and the impatiens of the psychiatry takes place in the hospitals area. Result of this cooperation will be a number of art objects, that will be shown in the exhibition.

The exhibition presents works of the art brut, the outsider art and the naïve art, which deal with the topic of architecture in an idiosyncratic and intensive way.

Wavelength 4

Art students of the academy of Münster refer the works of artists of the Kunsthaus Kannen. In an open process wave motions of different temperaments are started. This comes to view in the artistic dynamic. Wavelength 4 presents the results of the dialogue.

art brut
screwed + corded + glued

The exhibition “art brut: screwed + corded + glued” showcases objects and films from Belgium, France and Germany. The houses, ships, packages, carrying bags, faces and abstract objects are screwed, corded, glued and crocheted by the artists. Their working process is traceable. And the visitor will be fascinated by the diversity and the traceability, which give each object their individuality.

Paintings + 5 Life Histories
Interrupted artistic careers


The Exhibition Painting + 5 Life Histories showcases paintings by four male artists and one female artist who all began their artistic careers with Studies in Art. However during their studies they all suffered mental breakdowns followed by hospitalisation and therapy.

Wavelength 3
In a common project there is an artistic meeting between the artist of the Kunsthaus Kannen and students of the Academy of Fine Arts Muenster. Students from the fine art were animated to refer to the artist of the Kunsthaus Kannen.

Psychiatry in Africa – a photographic investigation
The exhibition shows photographic explorations by Leonore Mau, Dave Southwood and James Mollison of therapies and cures that are often challenging.

Sale - Exhibition 2006
